Celebrating the 4th of July wouldn’t be the same without fireworks. But if you are planning on lighting them yourself this year, know this: fireworks are extremely DANGEROUS and FIREWORKS SAFETY IS KEY.
FIREWORKS FACTS
Think we are just being paranoid Moms and Dads? Take a look at these numbers:
- In 2017, over 12,900 people went to an ER for firework-related injuries
- Sparklers, which burn at 1200˚ F, account for roughly one-quarter of emergency room firework injuries
- Children under the age of 15 accounts for 35% of firework injuries
- 69 % of emergency room firework injuries were for burns
- Fireworks cause an average of 18,500 reported fires per year
- About 2 in 5 fires started by fireworks each year are reported on the 4th of July
FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS
With that in mind, the National Safety Council and National Fire Protection Association recommend that you avoid consumer fireworks – i.e., those firework tents on the side of the road – and enjoy free public displays put on by professionals.
But if you are dead set on lighting your own fireworks, keep these safety tips in mind:
- Never let children handle fireworks, even sparklers – as some sparklers can burn up to 1200 F which can burn through metal and glass
- Alcohol and Fireworks DO NOT MIX – it’s just an accident waiting to happen – save the booze for later
- Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby
- Use Fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles.
- Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
- Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away
- Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and placing them in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day.
