The Dangerous Effect of the End of Daylight Savings Time

For most, the end of daylight savings time means an extra hour of sleep on a weekend. However, what few people realize is that the end of daylight savings means greater risks for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

According to AAA, motor vehicle accidents increase by 159 percent after Daylight Saving Time ends, with the most dangerous hour being between 5 – 6 p.m. Many of these accidents involve pedestrians, especially in the week following the time change, as many have not yet become accustomed to the late afternoon changes in lighting.

Here are some safety tips to help you best protect yourself as both a pedestrian and a motorist.

Important Tips to Remember as a Pedestrian and Motorist Following Daylight Savings Time

Pedestrians

  • Pedestrians should carry a flashlight and work to make themselves visible to motorists.
  • Wear bright clothing, or stick reflective tape on your clothes, backpacks, bags and briefcases to be visible in the lowlight conditions.
  • Expect distracted motorists. Don’t depend on a motorist’s ability to see you while they’re driving.
  • Avoid jaywalking.
  • Avoid crossing between parked vehicles.
  • Only cross the road on safe, designated, marked crosswalks.
  • Walk only in sidewalks.
  • If you’re walking in the street, walk facing traffic.

Motorists

  • Take extra care to look out for pedestrians.
  • Watch for pedestrians before making a turn.
  • Look for eye contact from pedestrians waiting to cross the street.
  • Avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods and areas while adjusting to the new conditions.
  • Keep your speeds down while adjusting to the new conditions.
  • Don’t depend on a pedestrian’s ability to hear your vehicle as it approaches.
  • Keep your windshields and windows clean.
  • Avoid any unnecessary distractions such as eating, drinking, or cellphone use.
